How Many Levels Does English Have?

English language skills are assessed at 6 levels according to the globally accepted CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) system. These levels objectively classify the level at which language learners are able to use English. These levels, ranging from A1 to C2, are categorized according to the student's language proficiency. Here are the English language levels and the skills each level includes:

A1 Level (Beginner Level)

A1 level is the beginner level for beginners in learning English. Students at this level are able to construct simple sentences and understand some expressions that are frequently used in daily life. At the A1 level, grammar and vocabulary are quite limited.

  • Comprehension: Can understand simple phrases and basic information directly related to themselves (e.g., name, age, where they live).
  • Speaking: Can introduce themselves and express their basic needs using short and simple sentences.
  • Writing: Includes basic writing skills, such as filling out a simple form or writing a very short note.

A2 Level (Basic User)

Students at the A2 level have a slightly wider vocabulary and can form simple sentences about topics that are frequently encountered in daily life. At this level, the student understands everyday conversations and simple dialogues more easily.

  • Comprehension: Can understand simple expressions and common words used in shopping, asking for directions or at work.
  • Speech: Can express himself in simple sentences, talk about the past and participate in very short dialogues.
  • Writing: Can write short sentences about themselves and leave messages on very basic topics.

B1 Level (Intermediate User)

The B1 level is considered an independent user, and the student reaches a more independent level of communication in English. At this level, the student is able to express in more detail the topics that are frequently encountered in everyday life and use basic grammar rules.

  • Comprehension: Can understand conversations and written texts on basic topics encountered in areas such as daily life, work and school.
  • Speech: Can express himself in simple situations encountered while traveling or in the work environment. He can share simple ideas by making longer sentences.
  • Writing: Can write short texts describing daily events and simple paragraphs containing their main views.

B2 Level (Upper Intermediate User)

The B2 level is considered an advanced level for independent language users. At this level, the student is able to read more complex texts and exchange ideas in depth. It is a sufficient level for the use of English for business or academic purposes.

  • Comprehension: Can understand complex texts and conversations related to concrete and abstract topics.
  • Speaking: Can fluently express ideas, exchange opinions, and construct more complex sentence structures.
  • Writing: Can write detailed texts and prepare reports or essays expressing their own views on different topics.

C1 Level (Advanced User)

The C1 level represents a user who has a good command of English. A student at this level is fluent in the language and can express himself or herself in professional or academic matters without difficulty. Has a good command of the subtleties of the language and can easily understand detailed texts.

  • Comprehension: Can understand challenging and long texts and comprehend indirect expressions.
  • Speaking: Can express himself fluently and spontaneously, and can exchange detailed ideas using complex sentence structures.
  • Writing: Can write complex and detailed essays; prepare persuasive texts and reports on a variety of topics.

C2 Level (Expert User)

The C2 level is the highest level of the language and represents a level at which English can be used as fluently and accurately as native speakers. At this level, the student can use English in a completely natural way and give detailed information about all kinds of topics.

  • Comprehension: Can fully understand all types of text and speech, grasp subtle meanings.
  • Speaking: He can express himself on almost any subject without difficulty and naturally. He can convey what he wants to say, using intonations and fine details.
  • Writing: Can write very detailed and understandable texts on any subject, and can use English flawlessly in academic and professional writing.

Use of CEFR Levels in English Courses

This leveling system is used in English courses to prepare appropriate course content for students and to structure the learning process. For example, English courses offer courses from beginner level A1 to C2 level, preparing content suitable for students of all levels. Thus, students can experience a more efficient process in learning English by making a start suitable for their level.
